Have you seen the Netflix show “Dark Mirror?”  If you haven’t, you owe it to yourself to check it out.  It’s one part fascinating and one part terrifying and odds are good that you’ll love it.

Season six of the show opens with an episode called “Joan is Awful,” where a woman named Joan discovers a streaming site called “Streamberry” which is eerily like Netflix, that has created a hit streaming show on Joan’s life.

As part of the ad campaign for the show, the company set up a promotional “Streamberry” website, and invited users to sign up.  If you opt to sign up, you are required to upload a photo, and give Netflix permission to use the photo as part of their marketing campaign.

Here’s where things get weird and borderline disturbing:  Netflix will actually use your image for marketing purposes.  In fact, the company has begun using user uploaded images on billboards and their Twitter account, subbing in each user’s name for Joan.

Right now, the billboards in question have only been spotted in the UK, but it’s sparking such a lively conversation across multiple social media channels that it would be easy to imagine the company expanding their reach.

How strange it would be to be driving down the road and suddenly see your face on a billboard, declaring that you were awful!  It’s an absolutely brilliant ad campaign that does begin to edge toward the disturbing but so far, it has certainly proven to be effective.
