If you haven’t seen videos of Coke’s amazing digital billboard posted just outside of Terminal 3 at the Guarulhos Airport in São Paulo, then you’ve been missing out.  The billboard is pure magic that blurs the line between the real world and the digital.

In the ad, the “Girl with the pearl earring” from the famous painting by Johannes Vermeer comes to life and grabs a giant (digital) bottle of Coke.  She then conjures a digital funnel and slides the bottle of coke into it.

The funnel winds down from the billboard and connects to a vending machine stationed just below it.  Viewers can chart the bottle’s progress through the funnel courtesy of lighting effects, and when the bottle reaches its destination, an actual coke is dispensed from the vending machine, free to anyone passing by.

It’s absolutely stunning to watch and a real technical achievement.

Granted, it would take a fairly robust advertising budget to pull off, and if you own a small to medium sized company, you may have to limit the number of free samples you give out, or change it slightly and dispense coupons to passersby, but the basic concept here can be used by almost anyone.  Even if you ultimately decide that this approach isn’t right for your company, it’s still well worth giving the video showing the ad in action a watch!
