National Geographic isn’t known for its brilliant billboard ads but every once in a while, they strike gold. Consider this brilliant, attention-grabbing offering:
Created by Loducca for National Geographic, the ad doesn’t rely on a billboard at all, but rather, simply a bit of floor space.
Naturally, the floor space chosen for this display was right at the bottom of an escalator so from the perspective of anyone descending it, it appears that they’re being led inexorably toward the waiting jaws of an alligator.
The ad was designed to draw attention to Richard Rasmussen’s “Wild World,” a program all about exploring the Brazilian rainforests with a trusted guide.
To say that the ad campaign was a huge success would be an almost sublime understatement. It’s a beautifully done, frankly terrifying bit of art that sparked a global conversation about NatGeo that continues to this day. A simply superb bit of advertising!
Even better though, is the fact that this kind of clever dimensionality can be incorporated into just about any ad, no matter what you’re selling.
If your brand has a particular animal or figure associated with it, now would be a great time to think about how you could use that association to create an absolutely eye-popping, unforgettable advertising experience.
If you’re struggling to come up with ideas you can use for your own brand that mirror this technique, we can help with that.
