Marmite Dynamite Chilli Spread might seem like a tough product to make a good billboard ad around. If you’re not familiar with the product, it’s popular in the UK, but little known elsewhere.
Or, at least it was little known until the company’s runaway success with one of their most recent billboard ad campaigns.
The ad on the billboard is simplicity itself. A picture of the product (minus the lid) and the phrase “Love it. Hate It. Be careful with it.”
But where’s the lid, you may ask?
That’s the magic of the ad.
The lid (giant sized, naturally) is a physical prop, placed in front of the billboard, embedded in a car windshield.
It’s a clever and imaginative way of visually connotating just how explosive their chilli spread is, and we absolutely love it.
The rest of the world did too, because from pretty much the moment consumers saw the ad, pictures and comments were flying around Twitter and other social media channels. Everyone, it seems, had something to say about a food product that few outside the UK had ever even heard of before.
The beauty of their approach to the campaign is that it can work with literally any product. It ultimately doesn’t matter what you’re selling, you can find ways of incorporating real world objects placed in the immediate vicinity of your billboard to help tell the story of your product or brand and as Marmite proved, doing so is advertising gold.
