Chipotle isn’t always on point with their advertising. They’ve had their share of “misses” when it comes to designing effective billboard ads. Having said that, when they get it right, they really get it right.
This recent ad campaign is a great case in point. The design of the ad is fairly simple. The left side is dominated by an image of some tasty looking food, while the right side contains the company’s name and some text.
The text is the important bit, and what makes the ad so memorable. Rather than extolling the virtues of their product, they took a transparent, almost tongue in cheek approach, stating bluntly “We bought this billboard because people tend to drive on this road.”
While it’s not outright hilarious, it is genuinely amusing and it had the effect of getting talked about, which increased consumer awareness of the brand and ultimately led to an uptick in sales. That’s a solid win. Even better, this approach can be effective no matter what product or service you’re selling. There’s value in that and it makes a design like this well worth considering.
