McDonalds has a long history of creating incredibly successful, impactful ads. It’s something they’ve gotten very good at, and one of their recent ad campaigns makes a direct reference to current events while increasing their own brand awareness.
The billboard in question sports an eye-catching red background with the familiar golden arches in the lower right corner and a giant cup of Coca Cola dominating the left side.
Next to this, there’s a temperature readout, with the words “reasons to refresh yourself” sitting right next to that. Given the spectacular heatwave dominating most of the country (and indeed, the world) right now, the message could not be more timely and it puts McDonalds front and center as, perhaps not a solution, but a means to get some much needed relief from the heat.
In our view, this is advertising at its finest, accomplishing a number of goals in one breath, and while it may be difficult to copy this idea exactly, depending on the business you’re in, it would certainly be possible for most businesses to imitate the strategy more broadly.
