The Coca Cola bottling company is always a great source of advertising inspiration.  They’ve been in the game a long time and have produced scores of memorable ads over the years.

This year is no exception, and you may have seen a billboard, or a snapshot of one on your favorite social media channel that looked a little unusual.

The iconic, flowing script that forms the words “Coca Cola” looks mangled and misshapen on some ads.

That’s a feature, not a bug, and it is a call to action.

The ad designers chose to display the logo the way it would appear on a crushed can of the soft drink, with the simple word “Recycle” appearing beneath it.

It is a minimalist approach to advertising that ties the brand to something that’s on an increasing percentage of the population’s mind:  Caring for our planet, and one small but impactful way to do that is via recycling.

Will it change the world?  No, of course not.  Will it even prompt enough people to recycle to move the needle to an appreciable degree?  That’s highly doubtful as well, but it does send a powerful message and it is an important first step in that it starts the conversation.

In that, it’s a huge win, both for Coke and for the planet, and best of all, this is the kind of strategy that any company can utilize, regardless of what product or service you offer.
