One of the things you hear repeatedly in advertising circles is “think outside the box!” It’s a phrase designed to prompt people to think about billboard advertising in new, creative and unconventional ways, and to be fair, that kind of thinking has led to some clever uses of billboard real estate.
Amazon took things to a whole different level though, when they advertised the start of Season two of their hit show “Jack Reacher.”
They decided not to use a billboard at all. Instead, they went bigger. Much bigger!
They rented the rooftops of office buildings and emblazoned their message over several of them. “Jack is Back” the message proclaimed, easily visible from ten thousand feet as planes flew over the city. The message continued on nearby rooftops, giving the date of the action hero’s return (November 1), and of course, a bit of Amazon Prime branding.
This is next level advertising, both literally and figuratively and it proved to be tremendously successful, sparking a global conversation.
The best part, from the perspective of any business owner looking to replicate the success of this campaign, is that it doesn’t matter what business you’re in. This advertising approach can be used for any business in any industry.
It’s wonderfully creative thinking because how many times have you found yourself sitting in a plane staring idly out the window? If you’re like most people, that’s a fairly large number. And to have something interesting and unexpected appear in your field of vision? That’s memorable indeed.
