…break me off a piece of that Kit Kat bar!

If you’re in the US, then you almost certainly know the jingle and sang along in your head as you read those words. While Kit Kat isn’t well known for its brilliant billboard ad campaigns, the jingle, and by extension, the brand, is just about everywhere.

The company behind Kit Kat proved, however, that they’re no slouches in the world of OOH advertising, either.  In Cannes, they put up a billboard that was almost shockingly simple in concept, but had everyone talking.

The concept was this:  What if we called out people’s obsession with their phones by showing an ad with lots of people looking at their phones, and then, we swap out the phones they’re holding with Kit Kat?

And that’s exactly what they did.  Literally.  That was the entire ad.  And its effect on the viewing public was amazing.  It blew up on social media and had everybody talking about it on their phones, of course, which adds delicious irony to an already delicious ad!

Admittedly, this strategy is niche.  If your company offers a service, or if you make something not easily handheld, it might be a bit tricker to pull something like this off – not impossible, just trickier.

Even so, it’s worth putting some creative brains together to find a way to incorporate this strategy exactly or one that closely mirrors it, because poking good natured fun at a thing we all do is a great way to draw attention, both to that thing we all do and to whatever you’re selling and dropping in to take the place of.
