The Ford Motor Company just finished up a unique angle on their digital billboard marketing…they allowed consumers to design billboards, then displayed them in cities all over the country. It was part of their “By Design” campaign that started in October of last year. Not only did the amateur designers get to create the artwork, they got to choose the city where their design would be displayed. The choices included Times Square, San Francisco Bay Bridge, Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago and Washington DC. Ford would then send a photo of the digital billboard on display to the designer. Ford’s digital marketing manager, Lisa Schoder, says they could easily continue the campaign this year because all of the technology is still in place. Schoder says they will be going deeper into what the “By Design” campaign means this first quarter and communicating that. Maybe if Ford continues the campaign, they will add Atlanta billboards to the mix.
