They’ve been around for years, but that doesn’t make billboard extensions in the form of people or animals any less eye catching. With all of the static on the landscape in Califronia, it’s a must in billboard advertising to be different.
When it comes to TV shows and movies, putting pictures of the characters just isn’t enough sometimes. Enter the extensions. These are extra build outs, outside of the normal size of the billboard. They aren’t used often, which is partly what makes them much more eye catching. Here on Atlanta billboards, we are used to seeing the famous figures of Chick-fil-A cows scrawling their misspelled messages across the canvas.
But in LA, it’s mostly films that use them to promote their cast. Most have just one or two figurine extensions. Probably the most extensions ever used was for the film The Expendables 3. A whopping sixteen characters sat atop the billboard, with many of them being big names with quite familiar faces. Harrison Ford, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jason Statham, and capping off the lineup atop the “3”, Sylvester Stallone.
Other films that have used this technique are Ted 2, Delocated, and Netflix’s Ibiza. Movie ticketing website Fandango also got in on the action. Their extension was of their fictitious character “Miles Mouvay,” played by Saturday Night Live’s Kenan Thompson.
