Your company’s got a message to get out. You’re doing well, and now you know you need to advertise. On your way to the office, you happen to see a stellar billboard that you know would be a perfect fit. It is the right area, lots of folks will see it. It’s in the part of town where your message will be received well. It’s big enough, it got your attention. So what’s next? Call the number on the sign? Google it?
I won’t lie, this is not an unbiased article. But I’d like to point out to you some of the best reasons it’s not gonna be your best option to straight up call the company. Billboards are sold on long term contracts, often not open to first time advertisers: If it is a premier billboard in the happening part of town, there’s a good chance it is already occupied, and under contract. If you go the route of talking to a company direct like Lamar, Fairway, or Clear Channel, at this point they are going to try and steer you towards one of their billboards. Not necessarily the best fit for you. That’s not to say that it might not be good for you, but Link Outdoor Media, Outfront, they all have great billboards, but they don’t have every billboard. Even more to this point, there are some billboard’s that are local, or rural, and not available to the big guys. You can get some serious bang for you buck in terms of Impressions and ROI.
2. Have the Billboard Companies Fight Over Your Business: I like to look at this kinda like how car dealerships work. They take you for a test drive, they tell you about all the perks, and how young it will make you appear to be in their car. Your already sold when you get into the negotiating table. When you don’t just go with the first one you see, You can lock yourself into an arrangement where they have got all the leverage. It’s much better to have the research done, to know what the market is like, how much a billboard is worth in that area, the kind of return on investment other businesses are getting, so that your properly armed to negotiate. 3. Make sure that You Send the Right Message with Your Billboard: There are few greater tragedies than when companies advertise on a billboard, but the message doesn’t fit the media. By that, I mean, You’ve usually got 8ish seconds to get their attention and call a prospect to action. If you put a billboard up with a paragraph of info, that’s wonderful, but most aren’t going to read that. Most won’t read any of it. Or another example, is putting up a billboard advertisement that’s vague, or catchy or funny, but has no actual call to action or branding involved.
