There aren’t many things less glamorous than a roadside gas station, but the Gila Bend food mart struck gold with a wonderfully effective series of advertisements.
Gas is a commodity, so you’ll find relatively few people who have much in the way of brand loyalty. And a billboard advertising a Chevron gas station (even one that’s open 24/7) isn’t bound to attract a lot of attention.
Travelers need gas, and most of them will stop at pretty much any clean, well-lit place, no matter the company logo.
Food though, that’s another matter entirely. If you can offer a good selection of great tasting food, suddenly your stop is no longer in commodity territory, and that’s what the Gila Bend Chevron did.
By splitting the billboard in two, advertising the commodity and convenience (open 24/7!) on one side with images of their food offerings attractive enough to make your mouth water, they set themselves apart from the pack. They gave viewers a reason to stop that went beyond a bathroom break and a chance to top off the tanks.
It’s simple messaging, but wow is it effective, and honestly, sometimes simple is best.
