Remember way back in the day (2004), there was a movie called “Mean Girls?”
Well, twenty years later, Paramount Pictures is resurrecting it and the remake hit the big screen in 2024, which had fans of the original movie excited.
The company leaned into the fan base of the original with at least some of their marketing. One of the ways they provided a bit of fan service was with a billboard that was placed on the side of a number of buses.
The billboard contained a message, apparently scrawled in lipstick that read:
“Look both ways, Regina,”
…followed by details about the upcoming movie.
We’re venturing into spoiler territory here, but in the original, Regina was hit by a bus. Fans of that movie saw the billboard and had a bit of a chuckle.
Even better, the billboard was eminently sharable, and struck up a lively conversation on a variety of social media channels which created more buzz for the movie.
The Lesson
The lesson here is simple:
If possible, tie your product or service to some cultural mooring or some current event (an upcoming movie, a rock concert that millions are talking about, etc.).
If you can do that, you can leverage the excitement about that event to shine a spotlight on your brand.
That’s not as easy as it sounds, by the way. In fact, it can easily backfire unless it is done carefully and creatively.
