It doesn’t happen often in life, or in the world of advertising, but every now and again, events converge in just the right way that it creates a once in a generation opportunity.

When something like that happens, you’ve really got no choice.  You have to take advantage of it.  Recently, Heinz did exactly that.

If you live in the United States, you know the name.  Heinz makes ketchup and mustard, among other things.  Condiments. 

Their ketchup comes in a distinctive red bottle, and their mustard in a distinctive yellow.  As it happens, a recent Marvel Universe movie came out featuring characters whose costumes matched those colors: Deadpool in red, and Wolverine in yellow.

You see where this is headed, right?  And yes, Heinz went there.  They created a split billboard design meant to occupy both sides of a busy city street.

On one side of the road, the iconic superheroes are standing side by side.  On the other side are the Heinz ketchup and mustard bottles with the headline “now you can’t unsee it.”  And they’re right.  Once you see it, you can’t unsee it.

As we said at the start, this is definitely not commonplace, and you might wait most of your life for an opportunity like this to come along that is applicable to your business.  When it does, however, be like Heinze.  For goodness’ sake, take it!

This campaign has been wildly successful, not because it relies on PhD level research, but because Heinz had the audacity to seize the moment.
