Most marketers would agree that given the limited space on billboard advertising, and the short amount of time the average viewer will be looking at it, visuals really matter. The most successful ads tend to tell their story with pictures, rather than words.
That’s certainly true, but there are lots of different ways to execute the basic “show, don’t tell” paradigm. Most people interpret that as some variation of showing off the product you’re advertising and in practice, that’s what the majority of billboard ads wind up doing.
Recently, Apple took a different approach in advertising their ubiquitous iPads. They don’t appear at all in the recent campaign. Instead, we get treated to fun, playful images that were created with their technology.
The result is a whimsical, playful series of ads that brilliantly showcases how the iPad can unleash creativity, and of course, this campaign just happened to coincide with the 2024 Olympic games hosted by the city of Paris, so the images were all related to the Olympics in one way or another.
Thus, although Apple was not an official sponsor of the games, they were able to leverage it and create a memorable ad campaign that’s still being talked about across multiple social media channels today.
That’s good advertising, and the best part is, almost anyone can leverage the core concept Apple used. After all, people use your product or service to “do stuff,” right? So why not figure out ways to show how the product is (or can be) used!
Granted, that won’t work for absolutely every business and if it happens not to work for yours, or if that particular idea doesn’t inspire you, that’s okay. It’s that kind of thinking though, that our company excels at, so if you’re struggling to come up with a killer idea for your next ad campaign, we can help with that.
