You could do a lot worse than taking a page from a recent Paramount + billboard ad.  Granted, in the case of Paramount, they had an iconic character to work with in the form of “Master Chief” from Halo, but even if you don’t have the rights to such an instantly recognizable image, the basic strategy employed by Paramount for their “Master Chief” ad is easy enough to copy.

The company wanted an eye catching, memorable way to build awareness of their new Halo streaming show, and what better way than to include an image of the main character, “Master Chief,” and specifically, his helmet.

The billboard looks great by day, but it really grabs attention once the sun sets.  That’s because the billboard’s design includes a giant LED screen hidden under the helmet architecture, with the LED serving as Master Chief’s visor.  When it gets dark, that visor glows a menacing blue which can be seen for miles.

To say that it grabbed people’s attention would be an understatement.  Photos and short videos of the billboard have been shared across multiple social media channels and it helped add to the hype and buildup of the show itself, which of course, is exactly what Paramount was shooting for.

Again, you don’t have to have usage rights to an instantly recognizable figure in order to get a lot of mileage out of this strategy.  All you really need is an eye-catching design that blends conventional OOH advertising with a few cunning special effects and you can create a billboard that will turn heads, wow your audience and raise customer awareness of your brand, all at the same time.
