Digital billboards are becoming increasingly common, and as technology improves, the kinds of ads companies can create are expanding at a rapid pace.

Forced perspective is a technique that allows digital ads to create the appearance of 3D on the 2D surface and has been used by brands ranging from Louis Vuitton to BMW to create some truly eye-popping effects.

Lego has the distinction of being the first toy company to utilize this technique, and their “Your City, No Limits” campaign has been causing quite a stir.

Created for the company by V4GOOD, one of the first ads they placed for this campaign was located in the V&A Waterfront’s main Centre Court.  Featuring a wide range of city scenes and characters drawn from multiple Lego sets, the thing that really got people’s attention was the fact that the character figures could be seen jumping and zip-lining between building walls.

Needless to say, the billboard drew crowds of appreciative fans and sent social media into a frenzy talking about it, which, in turn, did good things for the company’s bottom line, while simultaneously raising brand awareness and amping up the “cool factor” of the toy, which appeals to both children and adults alike.

It’s a superb ad, and a great example of what’s possible when employing the latest in digital billboard technologies.  Best of all, digital billboards in general, and the 3D, forced perspective technique can be used to market just about any product or service.
