There have been a number of older ads that have come to our attention lately that do a brilliant job of illustrating the principle of “show, don’t tell” and this recent campaign by Cingular definitely falls into that category.
Cingular, as you may remember, was one of the largest cellular service providers in the United States before it was bought by AT&T.
In that market, coverage area matters and Cingular had the distinction of having one of the largest networks in the United States and the fewest dropped calls.
One of their ad campaigns demonstrated this brilliantly with a bright orange billboard with white text that read: “Hate Dropped (blank space where a portion of the billboard’s message appears to have been ripped away).
Followed by additional text that read: “Switch to the network with the fewest dropped calls. Cingular”
Below the billboard, lying on the ground was the missing text from the upper portion of the billboard. The word “calls.”
These billboards were such an unexpected surprise that passersby would often stop to have their pictures taken next to the word “Calls.” The message was both compelling and hilarious, and you can find people talking about it, even today, on various social media channels. It also brought in more business to Cingular, which of course, was the main point.
