Uber has a profitability problem.  Their core business is losing money and although the company is sitting on mountains of valuable, saleable data that other corporations would be interested in getting their hands on, as of yet, they haven’t found a way of turning that into a reliable income stream.  The hope is that their latest play will do just that.  Here’s what they have in mind:

  • While Uber’s cartop OOH ads program has been around since 2020, they are now offering this form of advertising to small and medium sized businesses at extremely attractive rates.
  • The ads can be set to be displayed by zip code, focusing in on exactly where these smaller companies are located and serving as a set of mobile attention-getters.
  • Local agencies can use these highly localized mobile ad platforms to advertise in a more targeted and personal way and cities/counties can even advertise upcoming events.

Even better, in app discounts can be offered with ease.  Additional details include:

  • The company is planning its initial rollout of the new tech in selected ad markets to include Atlanta, Boston and New York.
  • Initially, the company plans to run ads on approximately 3500 vehicles in the markets referenced above.
  • Participation in the program from the driver’s side is optional, but drivers are being offered “15% more revenue” to put one of the OOH ad banners on top of their vehicle.

We’re excited to see how this plays out and we hope that Uber has at last found a way to start turning a profit.  The company offers an undeniably valuable service and we hope to see them remain part of the competitive landscape.
