Modelo, a well-known brand of beer, recently launched a stellar ad campaign conceived and implemented by the advertising studio, Groove Jones.

There are a great many different ways one can go about advertising a product, but Modelo’s campaign, which saw a handful of billboards placed in Washington D.C., Charleston, Miami and Ft Lauderdale, was really something special.

There are a couple of things that make this campaign stand out.  First and foremost, each billboard was a true work of art.  A series of hand-painted murals done in traditional Dia de Los Muertos style.  The day of the dead is a quite famous Mexican festival that takes place late in the year and celebrates the lives of departed loved ones.

The imagery on these murals is simply gorgeous, with a ritual altar featured, along with sugar skulls and marigolds, but it is the figure of a woman holding a bottle of Modelo that takes center stage and really draws the eye.

If that was as far as Groove Jones went, the campaign would have been an unquestioned success, but the company took things a step further, incorporating Augmented Reality (AR) elements into the advertising.  When viewed through a smartphone or similar device, the mural comes to life and features a variety of animation elements that makes it truly magical.

This is a wonderful blending of conventional advertising and cutting-edge technology, and the in addition to being a smashing success and one of Modelo’s most talked about campaigns, it offers two lessons for anyone who would love to do something similar.
