Unless you live in the UK, you may not be familiar with B&Q.  They’re a retail outlet that can best be described as the “Home Depot” of the UK, selling a broad range of DIY home improvement, lawn and garden products.

At the height of the pandemic, companies like B&Q did a better-than-expected business.  With so many people stuck at home, DIY projects became something of a global pastime and a great many “Honey-Do Lists” got shorter around the world.

Now that the pandemic is beginning to loosen its grip, the company opted for a new ad campaign that expressed a cautious optimism that has been absent from most of the world for more than two years.  The tagline of the ad campaign said simply “We Will Grow Again,” with those words placed atop a picture of green, growing plants and brightly colored flowers.

Essentially, in addition to advertising their brand, B&Q was creating works of art everywhere their beautiful billboards went up, and while they were doing that, they were also quietly sending out a message of hope and renewal to a part of the world that badly needed exactly that kind of message.

The UK has been hammered by more than just the pandemic, after all.  They’re also suffering from the negative effects of leaving the EU and there were many who feared (and some who still feared) that the move may permanently hobble Britain’s growth prospects.

The B&Q ad flew in the face of all of that and offered some hope.  A ray of brightness in an otherwise bleak landscape.

That’s huge, and it’s really saying something when a humble billboard can do all of that!
