Sometimes, you have to turn expectations onto their heads in order to get attention. This strategy was recently used by financial services company Klarna to great effect.
Millennials get a bad rap for a lot of different reasons, and one of the things that old timers like to complain about them is the fact that they’re no good with money.
That’s actually not true though, and Klarna used it to good effect by designing a billboard in pastel pink, bearing the headline “Millennials are useless with money.”
Then, beneath the screaming headline, they printed the truth. The reality is that Millennials are actually saving significantly more of their money as compared to older generations.
The use of pink on the billboard is brilliant for a couple of reasons. First and foremost, the unusual color choice grabs and demands attention, but second, finance has historically been seen as a “man’s game,” and pink is regarded by the older generations as anything but a manly color, so again, convention gets turned on its head.
In addition to being an eye-catching ad that sparked a lively conversation on a variety of social media channels, the campaign was wildly successful for Klarna, which is everything one can hope for from advertising of any sort.
