You’ve almost certainly seen numerous examples of clever billboard advertising, but often, you may think to yourself, “Sure, that’s fine if you have an eye catching or popular product, but what if you don’t?”

It’s a fair question and let’s face it, some products just don’t have a lot of marketing appeal.  They’re not sexy or exciting and trying to make them seem that way just feels false and can actually do more harm than good.

Even so, there are some clever approaches you can take.  Look at this billboard ad by “Noodles and Company,” for example.

On its face, this is a dead simple billboard ad.  It features pictures of some of the fast food chain’s offerings in a row running across the top, branding and logo information in the lower right corner and then, the phrase: “Recipes imported from more countries than these cars” along with arrows pointing downward into five different parking spaces that this ad looms over.

That’s good!  That’s eye catching, even if a fast food chain built around noodles isn’t exactly exciting.  It makes the viewer think, take a second look, and then look more closely at the cars parked in those spaces before looking up at the ad again.

Even better, Noodles and Company is enjoying tremendous success with the ad campaign, and is reaping the benefits of a lively ongoing conversation on a variety of social media as pictures of their snappy ad continue to be shared.

Best of all, this kind of unconventional approach can work for even the most unassuming of products, so don’t worry if you don’t think your product is especially glamorous.  It doesn’t have to be.
