prostitution billboards

Police in Huntington, West Virginia are hoping that a new billboard advertising campaign will prevent more people from coming to the area to solicit prostitutes.  Chief Joe Ciccarelli says johns are coming to Huntington from Kentucky and Ohio and he believes it’s also fueling the area’s drug problem. Chief Ciccarelli says, “They are coming here so they don’t have to face scrutiny in their own neighborhoods, and we don’t want them here.” Mayor Steve Williams supports the billboard advertising campaign, saying “sometimes it takes a little public shaming to catch somebody’s attention and we will start putting faces up there.”  Reaction from the public is mixed, with some saying offenders should just be put in jail, and the public shaming is too much.  Mayor Williams says “whether it is proper or not will be determined by whether or not it has any effect.”  Faces are expected to be posted within the next two weeks.  The billboard campaign will be funded with money from drug seizures.
