If you’re not familiar with the company, audible produces high quality audio books.  Audio books are perfect for people who love to read but are generally too busy to do so.  Having someone read the book you’re interested to you is a great compromise; and is something you can enjoy in the car, on your way to and from work, in the evenings when you’re lying in bed and about to drift off to sleep, or just about anywhere else.

The company is wildly popular, but theirs isn’t exactly a household name.  The company is aiming to change that and a recent billboard ad campaign designed by the clever folks at Fold7 are helping them do exactly that.

One of their new billboards reads: “This is the story of that motorway drive which started to turn into a real dragon awoke from its centuries-long slumber on the hunt for terrified travelers.”

With the company’s name perched in the lower right-hand corner of the ad.

The decision to bold the first part of the text was brilliant as many people would describe their daily commutes back and forth as drags, but more than that, the decision to use lighting and smoke effects to make the billboard look as though it has been singed by dragon fire was absolutely inspired and creates a design that simply demands attention.

Even better, Fold7 has designed a few of these.  Another of their recent offerings features another snippet of text on a billboard that appears as though it’s being hoisted away by aliens in a UFO, while yet another features a portion of the billboard that has been cut away, revealing a bank vault, with the text describing a grand heist.

These are simply exquisite designs that strike the perfect balance between showing and telling.

People tend to gravitate to the phrase “show, don’t tell” and that can be effective, but in the world of billboard advertising, there’s room for both, as this audible campaign brilliantly illustrates.
